Water Lilies, The Clouds: Claude Monet: Hand-painted art oil reproduction on canvas. Claude Monet's water lily paintings made him famous. The artist painted the water lily pond in his yard over and over and over, from different angles, at different times of day, from different perspectives and using slightly different color palettes. The pond allowed Monet to explore some of his favorite themes: Reflections in water, the passage of time, and the color palette of nature. Monet rarely gave these paintings specific names. Critics in later years have named them, in order to keep them separate from one another. "Water Lilies (The Clouds)" is an extremely large painting from this series. The perspective used in this painting is unique: Since the viewer is standing in the water, which is reflecting the sky, and the sky itself is not visible in the painting, the world appears to be upside down. The sky is below and the earth is above. The vast majority of this painting consists of reflected images. Large trees that line the pond are visible at the top of the canvas, but mainly appear refracted and reflected in the water. Some trees are so tall that their reflections extend off the bottom of the canvas. Lily pads dot the water, reminding the viewer that this is a reflection. Pads are a bright, vibrant green, allowing them to stand out from the reflected trees.
